Informal catch-up #1: 15 Sept 2026 11.00-12.00

Host: Anne-Wil Harzing (Middlesex University, UK)

Informal catch-ups - a revamp of our new members meetings - allow members to get to know each other (better), create opportunities for collaboration, and facilitate information exchange. Their overarching goal is to create higher levels of cohesion and connections within the CYGNA network, so that connections are not dependent on a handful of members, such as Lead Team members.

Creating a high level of network cohesion and connections has proved challenging even when our network was a lot smaller. In the images below you can find a quantitative analysis that Daniela Lup did in our March 2018 meeting (see also CYGNA: Social network analysis and managing large research teams). It showed that if you took the Lead Team nodes out, the CYGNA network's connectivity dramatically reduced.

In this first informal catch-up Anne-Wil explained the new format and suggested three questions as alternatives to a traditional "academic resume" type introduction.

  • Why have you joined CYGNA and why have you stayed in the network?
  • What are you looking forward to in this new academic year?
  • Is there anything you would really like to talk about in CYGNA meetings?

We were bowled over by how many people joined (22), how open and honest everyone was, how genuine and varied their reasons were for being in CYGNA were, and how many new ideas for CYGNA activities came up. We are looking forward to seeing this new meeting format flourish.

Meeting 72: 13 Oct 2026, 11.00-13.00: Building Mutual Understanding across Career Stages, and between Academics and Managers
