CYG: Career stage CYGs
Introductory page for our new career stage CYGs [Cygna special interest groups]
With CYGNA now approaching 450 members, it is becoming harder to organise events that appeal to everyone. In addition to our plenary Meetings, our first CYG: Teaching & Scholarship Research, our new members meetings and our weekly Cygna Writes meetings, we are therefore launching separate CYGs [Cygna special interest groups] for different career stages.
Whilst following the overall CYGNA Mission, values, and meeting charter, these informal groups are co-created by their hosts and participants. They decide on their own meeting frequency, meeting style and activities, as well as conditions for membership.
Senior CYG - started November 2024
Senior CYG is for CYGNA members who are in the later stages of their academic careers, typically at full professorial level, and with considerable leadership experience in academic institutions, e.g. responsible for big research teams, Department heads, (Associate) Deans, Pro-VCs etc.
The aim of this group is to create an informal and confidential sounding board for these senior academics to help them manage the daily challenges of line management in universities. We talk about issues such as:
- How do I craft my career/identity as a senior academic to align with my goals/strengths/interests, especially when in a non-traditional career path.
- How to balance my own professional goals with the responsibility of developing, empowering, and protecting others. How to stay focused, or how not to "drift", once you become a senior academic.
- How to resolve or manage any conflicts between what I am expected to do as a senior leader - formal or informal - and my own personal values.
- How to transition succesfully out of a full-time academic role, whether for retirement or to take on other projects.
We currently have some thirty senior CYGNA members who are participating in this group. It is run by Ciara O'Higgins and Anne-Wil Harzing and meets monthly for an hour. Although not everyone will be able to join every month, we do expect members to be active participants. Chairing of the meetings is alternated to minimise time commitment for individual members. If you are a CYGNA member and interested in joining us feel free to contact Ciara.
PhD/ECR CYG - call for volunteer co-leads
At CYGNA, our biggest membership group consists of PhD students and Early Career Academics. We are therefore actively looking for one or more CYGNA members in this category to co-lead a CYG for this career stage and co-create a supportive community. Doing so will not only help your fellow swans in this career stage, but will also give you an early experience of leadership in academia. Feel free to contact the Lead Team to volunteer.
Mid-career CYG - call for volunteer co-leads
We are also considering setting up a CYG focused on mid-career researchers. These are typically academics who are 7-10 years out of their PhD and are looking to take the next step in their careers. Support for this crucial career stage is often limited. So if you are a CYGNA member and you would like to gain leadership experience whilst helping your colleagues and learning from them, feel free to contact the Lead Team to volunteer.
