Search Report (basic or extended)
Information about creating a full search report
To simplify record keeping of data searches, Publish or Perish (from version 6.x onwards) can generate a comprehensive search report in a single command. The search report contains all of the following:
- The search terms and other search parameters
- Data retrieval information: data source, date of search and of actual data, status of the search request
- The metrics that Publish or Perish calculated on the results
- A formatted list of results, in the order that is shown in the Results list
- [Version 7.17 and later] The abstract of each publication, where available. You must choose the extended report format to include these; this also formats the publication meta data in a slightly different way for clarity.
When you generate a search report as a Save as... command it will be written as formatted text in Rich Text Format (RTF), which can be read by most word processors including Microsoft Word, Pages, LibreOffice Writer, SoftMaker TextMaker, and many others.
When you generate a search report as a Copy [to Clipboard] command it will be copied to the system's clipboard as both Rich Text Format (RTF) and as plain text (in Unicode encoding). This makes it suitable for pasting into word processors (which will see and use the RTF copy, keeping all formatting intact) as well as into plain text editors and other text-based tools (which will see the structured, but unformatted plain text copy).
Other export formats
If you are primarily interested in either the metrics or the actual results, perhaps for further analysis in a spreadsheet, statistics tool, or reference manager, one or more of the following commands might be more suitable. All of these are available both as Save as... and as Copy [to Clipboard] commands:
