What has a university published in a (set of) journal(s)

Shows you how to use the Publish or Perish software to find out what a particular university has pubished in a specific set of journals

Bibliometric research doesn’t always have to involve large-scale data collection and publication of the results. You may have narrowly framed questions that can be answered by collecting data on a small group of institutions.

Above is an analysis of publications in a set of seven key International Business journals for eight UK institutions. I selected six institutions that are well-known for their focus on IB research. I then added my own institution (Middlesex University) as well as another institution where one of my mentees had applied for a job.

This allowed me to assess the relative standing of these institutions in the field of International Business. Information like this might be useful for job applicants or PhD students looking for an institution in a specific field. It may also help in preparing an institution’s research environment statement for the national research evaluation or funding applications.

This analysis allowed me to compare not only the institutions’ productivity in the field, but also their citation impact. For instance, I noticed that although Middlesex University was not one of the most productive universities in terms of the number of publications, it did have a higher number of citations per paper. It was also striking that institutions differed far less in their hA (which looks at citations per year) than in their h-index.
