York
{Subtitle}
York is an ancient city, dating from pre-Roman days. It has a rich history
that includes Roman and Viking conquerors. Among its many museums (see below)
are the Yorkshire Museum, covering Roman, Anglo-Saxon, and medieval periods,
and the Jorvik Viking Centre, about the occupation by Vikings.
Here is a partial list of York's attractions, with links to their respective
(external) web sites.
- Fairfax House Web
site
- One of the most distinguished town houses in Britain, with a stunning
18th century interior.
- Jorvik Viking Centre Web
site
- A museum built on the site of some original archaeological Viking streets
a wonderful experience as you are taken through a reconstruction
of Viking houses; sounds and smells are included!
- National Railway Museum Web
site
- One of the largest railway museums in the world, this museum displays
a large variety of trains, engines and other exhibits that illustrate
England's glorious railway past.
- Treasurer's House Web
site

Treasurers of the York Minster.
- YorkBoat Web

- Independent brewery that creates Yorkshire Beer. Guided tours with beer
sampling are provided.
- York Castle Museum Web

painting to the art of the twentieth century.
- York Dungeon Web

- York Minster and St William's College Web
site
- York Minster is the largest medieval church north of the Alps and has
a wealth of (original) stained glass.
- Yorkshire Museum Web
site
- This museum covers a thousand years of York's (and Britain's) history,
ranging from the Roman days, through the Anglo-Saxon and medieval times.
In addition, special exhibitions have included legendary monsters, dinosaurs,
and currently (from 22 October) the Jurassic.
- York Story Web
site
- An exhibition and audio-visual of York's history and buildings.
There are many more sights to be seen in York (check with the York
tourist information), including some very ancient (and narrow) streets,
lots of cute little shops, and a Betty's Tea Room (others are found in Harrogate
and Ilkley).
