14.1.3 Ability to analyze results

After conducting a search, ISI's WoS offer the option to further analyze the results. You can for instance run reports for the number and proportion of citations coming from particular countries, authors, source titles (journals). You can also analyze citations per year.

These options can be very useful if you want to show that your citations are increasing by year or that your work is cited in high-quality journals and/or in a large variety of countries. This can useful to include in an application for tenure, promotion or research funding.

Unfortunately, ISI does not actually analyze the number of citations. All results in the analyze function are for citing articles, not citations. As one citing article can and often does include more than one citation to an academics work, these analyses can seriously underestimate an academics citations.
