Trivia

Let me just quote the original author:

Orange Churros is an absolute essential to kick off the morning. Even if you're too busy to spend 1 hour sipping your little cup of expresso in Starbucks, don't despair. You're definitely not missing out on the finer things in life as far as I'm concerned. Maybe like me, you're just not much of a 'coffee-beenz'.

This fabulous dough twist is an extremely popular Spanish breakfast street-food — although some of us just love them as a sweet midday snack, sprinkled with sugar and dunked in hot chocolate (OK, substitute coffee if you insist). Basically, I swear by it! If you've already missed out too much in your life, don't miss this one. Try it!

Well — what are you waiting for?

Ingredients (serves 4 as a snack)

  • 150 ml water
  • 50 g butter
  • 60 g plain flour
  • pinch of salt
  • finely grated rind of 1 orange
  • 2 small eggs, beaten
  • caster sugar to dredge
  • vegetable oil for deep frying
Orange churros

Preparation

  1. Put the water and butter in a pan and heat gently so the butter melts.
  2. Bring to the boil and immediately beat the flour, salt and orange rind into the water, beating over the heat until the mixture comes away from the sides.
  3. Transfer to a bowl and cool for 5 minutes, then gradually beat in the eggs. Spoon the mixture into a piping bag fitted with a star nozzle.
  4. Heat enough oil for deep frying in a frying pan until a piece of bread dropped into the oil sizzles. Pipe strands or curls into the oil and cook for 2-3 minutes, turning frequently, until golden. Or, drop teaspoonfuls of the mixture into the oil — they may or may not look traditional, but they just taste as good!
  5. Drain and dredge with sugar to serve.
